Cloud is nothing new and I think I went to my first cloud conference with speakers from Cisco & Dell and a bunch of others when I was working in Edinburgh in 2008 before returning home to Christchurch in 2010.

I remember one of the speakers telling us about his birth of his first child and his sheer excitement & amazement of how he’d used his (original) iPhone to take a photo of the new baby putting it up to Facebook via the cloud. We now think of this as standard everyday technology but I have to say it was pretty cool at the time and the possibilities of cloud computing making the internet exponentially more powerful really got my juices flowing….

Now cloud has truly kicked in becoming the norm, especially for any start-up you’re going serverless, no expensive tin to maintain but with legacy technologies and companies with challenging data sovereignty or strict compliance comes challenges. It’s not simple but there’s no doubt the array of services & modules on the main platforms - AWS, Azure & GCP provide mind boggling choices and bang for your buck saving you on maintaining expensive infrastructure (& experts to manage it) - depending on what it is you’re trying to do of course.
